Esko Kongsberg 3mm Multi-Purpose Down Cut Milling & Router Bits
Esko Kongsberg 3mm MDS03 series is a lineup of high-precision, solid tungsten carbide multi-purpose down-cut milling and router bits designed for Kongsberg Precision Cutting Systems. These bits feature a 3mm shank diameter and a total length of 38mm. They are specifically engineered for the High Speed Milling Unit (HSMU) and High Power Milling Unit (HPMU) on Kongsberg X, XL, and C series digital cutting tables.
Because they use a down-cut spiral geometry, they force the material downward toward the vacuum table during operation. This down-cut action prevents thin, flexible, or delicate substrates from lifting, vibrating, or fraying, resulting in an exceptionally clean top surface finish.
Material Performance Guidance
Because these are MDS (Multi-purpose Down-cut) bits, they behave differently than the more common AUS/MUS (Up-cut) series:
Plastic & Acrylic: Delivers an optimal top edge by packing chips downward, which acts to damp vibration on thin sheets. Note that you must ensure a proper feed rate to prevent heat buildup and chip re-welding in deep channels.
Wood & MDF: Eliminates fuzzing, splintering, or top-layer blowout. This makes them superior for face-veneered materials or laminates.
Aluminum & ACM: Generally, up-cut bits (like the Kongsberg ADS series) are preferred for metals to extract hot chips rapidly. Use the MDS series on aluminum only if you are processing incredibly thin foil laminates that wrinkle under upward tension.
